About

Inclusive / Representative / Relevant / Fair

Our Vision:

An initiative that places the dual importance of inclusion and an evidence-based approach at the heart of all it does, with the intent to develop an integrated airspace that is safe, liberating and effective for all.

Our Purpose:

The purpose of the SAC is to promote a shared understanding and develop safe routes of integration for all airspace users, initially in Class G and ultimately in all natures of airspace, in order to successfully secure new and inclusive regulated types of airspace.
We aim to:
  • Promote and advocate for the safe use of airspace by all
  • Adapt to and embrace changes that are in the interests of all the UK in general whilst seeking to preserve the existing status and freedoms of current airspace users.

Our Values:

  • Transparency and integrity
  • Commitment to respective conversations
  • Commitment to the journey of collaboration.

How we work:

There are lots of stakeholders that talk about airspace in the UK, but often understandably from the viewpoint of their organisation. The SAC represents no vested interest groups.

The Shared Airspace Council (SAC) brings together existing aviation groups, regulators, and industry experts to make recommendations about sharing airspace safely. We don't replace these groups - instead, we work with them to review proposals and regulations, build evidence, and agree on the best ways forward. While we operate mainly in the UK, our recommendations could be useful internationally.
In order to do this, we will:
  • Meet at regular intervals (and irregularly if required), both face-to-face and virtually to understanding the changing nature of airspace, aviation, and their exploitation
  • Debate and critique possible changes to airspace rules, procedures and controls and commission and direct evidence-gathering activities in order to collect data to be used to support recommendations and proposals
  • Always seek to use logical, rational, and analytical techniques to quantify important parameters such as risk
  • Embrace an evidence-based approach; the evidence-gathering activities will adopt best academic practice in conducting rigorous research activity to address issues such as prejudice, bias, significance, interpolation, and projection/prediction from sample data
  • Adopt principles of fairness, transparency, and openness in undertaking research as well as publishing data/outcomes and conclusions
  • Engage with the existing UK Civil Service and Government decision making and legislative processes to ensure that participants’ views, interests and ambitions are taken into account in any future changes, consultation and recommendations
  • Seek to partner with and work closely with many existing organisations. We will do this by actively seeking out such groups and entities and explicitly mapping out relationships and wider connections, identifying spheres of influence, authority and expertise
  • Work closely with the DfT, CAA and all reputable aviation, airspace, Regulation and technology authorities.
We will have completed our task once airspace is fully integrated.
